usually i'm a fan of mother nature...

but today she is kind of a bitch. hello all! welcome back from the holiday season. i'm just sitting here getting reacquainted with the internet (and by extension the rest of the outside world) and "watching" football (more like listening). they just had to replay a down b/c the camera got on the field. i find this amusing, but i'm suffering from severe sleep deprivation.

so, yeah, mother nature. planned to come home today, leave sometime between 10am and noon. stayed out until 5am on new year's eve and planned to spend yesterday lounging, eating, watching football with my dad, and cooking dinner with the fam. managed to get up at 11:30am after fitful sleep - i woke up every 2 hours to pee. good time. love you alcohol and water.

ate some breakfast, lounged with my mom and eventually made my way to the shower sometime around 1:30pm. just as i was gearing up for an afternoon of sudoku, sleep, and football in my sweatpants on the couch the phone rings. hey jeff, what's up? oh, really - tornadoes and hail!? tomorrow! (thought process - sweet! an extra day at home!) oh. you can't take an extra day off work. (thought process - oh fucking hell. am so not ready to leave. clothes all over the house. what about dinner i was going to make. my sister isn't here!).

after further investigation of my own, my parents and i realized that indeed the entire trip would be through rain and thunderstorms, possibly hail, no matter what time we left on monday morning. after much crying and pouting my mom and dad shifted me into "preparation mode" and i packed faster than i ever have in my life - well, my mom packed me faster than i've ever packed in my life. i managed to gather my christmas presents and dirty clothes while she did the rest. meanwhile my dad got up out of his chair and abandoned his own lazy sunday afternoon to vacuum and clean out my car. mostly i just bitched and moaned.

i wanted to drive the entire way just to get it over with. thank goodness jeff put his foot down and didn't listen to me. both of us had been up til 5 and were exhausted - there was no way we'd make it safely, especially in the dark and possible rain. he arranged for a free hotel room (through some points his dad had from frequent traveling) about half way to charlottesville, and we set off at 4:30 pm, still in disbelief of how our day had turned so quickly. i slept immediately and about two hours later jeff just couldn't take it any more and i finished the drive to salisbury, nc.

i have never been so happy to see a hampton inn in my entire life. my eyes were staying open only out of fear and the knowledge that they must, that i was almost there and soon it would be ok.

we got up at 6:30, showered, ate, and then set out for part II of the premature journey home. this time it was jeff that slept first, then two hours later i couldn't take it anymore. we finally made it at 11:30 and after ordering pizza we basically passed out comatose for a couple of hours.

on the bright side:
*apparently it's been pouring down all day in georgia and most of our route home and we would've hated every second of driving in that mess
* i now can approximately rap all of the first verse of "benzie box"
* i have done one load of laundry already
* i'm watching a bit of college football which i wouldn't have been able to do
* i'm home in my pjs, just like i planned yesterday, instead of stressed out in the rain driving through danville, va.

all in all, i suppose it wasn't too bad, and i'm glad it's already over with, but it would've been nice to spend those last few hours with my family and get a good night's sleep.

so this is my first blog of the new year. i'll try to be funnier next time - i just gotta figure out how to get back into the swing of things. also, brain still fried. it's a miracle i can even put together sentences.
