I can't believe that in less than a month I'm going to be leaving Australia. These past few months have been some of the most exciting and interesting experiences of my life. Coming home is going to be a huge culture shock (not to mention reality check), and to be completely honest I'm kind of dreading it. Of course it will be awesome to reunite with old friends when I return, but leaving behind new friends I've made here will definitely leave a void in my heart.
Luckily, it's not time to get sappy and poetic just yet (something almost unheard of here on Nik's Notes). This afternoon I'm headed to Byron Bay to spend most of my last three weeks in Australia at the beach, torturing myself into becoming a real surfer and working on my tan. I'll be back in Melbourne for about 4 days before departing for reals back to the States so that I can spend a little bit more qt (quality time, not quentin tarantino) with my friends here.
What this means for the blog is anyone's guess. I'm taking my computer with me because I'll be studying and taking a take-home exam next weekend while in Byron. Hopefully I'll be online semi-frequently and can post updates while I'm there. That's the plan anyway. If nothing else, look for some closing remarks in a couple of weeks before I come back and see many of you face to face.
One last thing before I go. Ben has been asking about The Ashes. This is a cricket tournament of sorts played between England and Australia (not sure how frequently - Ben?). It's 5 5-day cricket games. Not sure what the winner gets exactly, but hell, bragging rights are probably good enough. I caught a second of it on the television the other day and the Aussies were kicking the living shit out of England's team. Apparently they had so many runs they just quit and gave England a turn because if England couldn't get through all their batters in the time remaining, it'd have to be a draw. No, I don't really understand cricket either. My South African friends have tried to explain it to me, but the more I learn, the more I determined I am that it's a fucking absurd sport I'm not sure I really want to be associated with (Sorry, Ben).
So yeah, I heard also on the news that one of Australia's players is hurt and won't be able to play the next match. Also, the Aussies are apparently pissed because the police won't let them cause a ruckus and have any fun at the match. Other than that, Ben, I'm still unsure of what a "pom" is other than a word for Brits.

Well, I can certainly understand your dread at coming home, though I can't say that I won't be glad to have you back. Enjoy your last few weeks there!
The ashes are for just that, a little urn of ashes. Long ago England lost a match against Oz and burnt the wickets (wooden stumpy things) in protest. They were put in an urn and fought for every 2 - 1 1/2 years.
You're right Niki, it is a fucking absurd sport, maybe even more boring than baseball.
Enjoy Byron. I remember getting whupped by the undertow and waves trying to body board. But then, I am a wuss.
