The Doggie Paddle

Much to the chagrin of most my readers, this post is not about Masala (did not have my camera at the dog park, the big event of the weekend).

My first day in court:

8:30am: I arrive at the office an hour early. I have two cases, memorized and stressed about over the last week, but I was gone all last week at a training conference just want to double check some stuff.

8:35am: Freak out moment number 1. Court calendar reveals that I actually have FOUR cases --> that's two more than I had mentally prepared for. Luckily one of them has basically already been done for me by the person who came before me and the other is one I remember

8:49am: Freak out moment number 2. All other office personnel will be in other courtrooms around the area, unable to assist me on this most anxiety-ridden day. Outlook not so good.

9:16am: Nervous energy seeping out my pores as I cross the street to the courthouse. Attempt to maintain composure. Strangely am not as nervous as I thought I would be, but then again, I have practiced my first sentence a hundred times in my head.

9:46am: Successfully spoke aloud in the courtroom without embarassment!

10:38am: Freak out moment number 3. Shit. Reprimanded by bailiff for walking too close to the bench. Whoops. Can they fire me for this?

10:50am-12:45pm: A complete and total blur. Running around the courtroom. Talking to a billion people. Feel self-conscious that I have pestered and annoyed people. Feel happy that I accomplished positive outcomes in two cases (see above: one actually already done for me). Feel grateful to have avoided "the nightmare" case for the time being by postponing it to another date. Feel amazed that I faked my way through this without actually knowing what the fuck was going on. Is it unprofessional to drink at lunch?

Yay Big Lawyer Girl!! You are so cool!

I can't even imagine how stressful that was but now it's over and you didn't accidentally get someone thrown in jail! Drink up!

Nice work, Nik! I'm so proud!

As for drinking at work: I have a fifth of vodka from the Russian Ambassador's office in my bottom desk drawer. I often wonder why I haven't opened it yet. Care to join me? :)
