Happy Birthday Masala! (Observed)

(Yes, I look stoned in the picture below, but the dog is cute, so cut me some slack!)

On September 7, 2007 I adopted a sad little 8-week old puppy from the local animal shelter.

If you do the math, that means that today that pup is ONE YEAR OLD! (Also, my mom and I decided that 7/7/07 was a helluva cool birthday to have.)

When I first got him, he was a sickly little guy. The vet even warned me that he might not make it if it turned out he had this one particular disease that is often fatal. That same night, I lay in bed crying because I could not bear the thought of losing my new friend.

Luckily, he's a tough cookie and it wasn't long before he was a rowdy, peeing-everywhere, chewing-everything, curious puppy dog.

I had hoped to take him to the beach, where is a big fan of digging and is beginning to take interest in the water to celebrate his birthday. However, he's been fighting some sort of intestinal/digestive ailment since freaking Thursday afternoon (good timing, M, being the holiday weekend and all) so we didn't go yesterday.

Today he is bouncing around (again, stellar timing) so we went to the park and marched around the lake for a bit. We encountered a scary snake - for reals - it opened its mouth and hissed at us. After we manuevered around it, we found a sandy area and I let him go to town digging in the dirt.

I'm still holding off on any birthday "treats" because I'm not sure this stomach thing is over yet, so instead I've given him a night of relief from his collar and made sure to give him extra love and affection (if that's even possible, damn dog is so spoiled).

My little buddy has saved me from myself countless times and never fails to make me laugh, even when I'm feeling lower than low. I hope his past year has been even half as happy as my past 10 months. I have undoubtedly become one of those crazy, pet-obsessed people that I used to mock.

If we had friends in town, I absolutely would've thrown him a birthday party, so I hope you all will join me in wishing him Happy 1st Birthday!

Happy birthday Masala! May your day be filled with...

an overabundance of ear and belly scratches...

lots of new smells...

and some treats (when your tummy gets better)!

PS-love the pictures, Nik - it's amazing how much he's grown!

Yea! Happy Birthday little fella! He has grown so much, but I still think he's the cutest. puppy. ever!

I hope to one day meet him and we should have a big party/celebration for him. I'm glad he's been such a faithful friend for you and know that he is getting lots of love and attention and affection on his end as well. Ya'll make a great pair.

Although, in that first picture (you look tee-niney BTW, are you eating?!) and I didn't think you had any pants on and he was sitting in your jeans or something in the laundry room!

Happy Belated Birthday, Masala! As usual, I'm a little late to the party. I hope you had a stellar day. Four-legged friends are best! :)
