As my entry from Monday noted, that day was not my best ever. Part of the suckiness of the day, indeed the event that got the ball rolling, was a trip to the hair salon which left me $150 poorer and a whole lot uglier. We've all had this happen - come home in tears because those people don't know what the hell they were doing and didn't do it right. There have been times when I've been sitting in the chair lying about how much I like it only to go home and scream about it's ugliness and figure a way around it.
Well, instead of figuring a way around it and cursing the salon, I took back the night. I actually called them back. I said, look, I'm not happy, what can you do for me? You know what they said? They said come on back, we'll fix you up for free. Just like that. Sure, I felt guilty talking to the lady who had done this to me - explaining that it wasn't a personal assault - and it was a bit awkward, but damn, I can stand a little bit of awkwardness over forking out another $75 to get it done right somewhere else. Poverty breeds courage I suppose.
True, it's easier to get a correction when the color is just a little wrong rather than they've cut too much off, but we can own our own hair for goodness sake - next time this happens to you, call 'em up, ask nicely, and you might be amazed at what happens next.
But now I have another problem - to tip or not to tip and how much the second time around...any suggestions?

Oh, I feel your pain. Have been here before, but with a bad cut. (Those who knew me in high school will remember my senior year layered helmet head cut--I almost needed therapy for that traumatic experience.)
My advice to you is to tip ONLY if you are pleased with the cut. And I would only tip 5% more than I would in a normal situation.
Good luck and Godspeed.
so you think tip more, not less? if the normal experience is $150 (for cut and color) but i'm only getting color corrected, which would be less, like $10 or $15? am completely clueless.
You've got a good point there. Are you going back to the same stylist for the correction? If not, I would be inclined to tip a little more since the new person has nothing to do with the crap job that Stylist #1 did.
I'm stumped. This is a question for Carolyn Hax.
yep, same stylist. it's not really that i had a problem with her technique - that was actually quite good - the issue is just that the colors she picked were wrong and i want my hair a particular way. i mean, i can walk out in public with the 'do, i just look washed out and it's not exactly how i wanted it. i'm confident she can fix it, i even kind of like her. i sort of even feel a little guilty, but hell, that's a lot of money to spend and not be satisfied. i'm stumped, too. anybody else got any ideas?
Hey, I just got my hair cut today. No color because I can't afford it unless I'm doing it myself - thank you Garnier. I'd say to base your tip on whether or not you think you'll go back to this girl. If she fixes it and you like it, tip her like $20. Maybe she'll remember that you're a good customer and be more inclined to do a good job the first time. If you want to shop your head around next time, I think the $10 range is fine.
Although running into a stylist you bailed on around time is equivalent to running into an ex.
thank you girls for the advice! my appt is friday at 2pm and i'll post something to let you know how it goes. everyone keep their fingers crossed for me.
