Ten years ago I moved out of my parents' house and for the first time in nearly my whole life I didn't have a dog living with me. For those entire ten years, I've dreamed of one day having a dog again. In college I was too poor (and probably too irresponsible). After college I was traveling too much. Law school was too hectic (also poor).
Now I have a job, my own house, and have settled down for a bit. Against the advice of the logical side of my brain, my heart and I went down the SPCA on Friday afternoon and adopted an adorable little puppy. His mother was some sort of hound dog; they speculate his father was a lab. His tongue is part black, so I think there's some chow in him, and the lady picking up her cats from the vet reckons he's got some beagle in there.
A wee, scrawny little guy on the first night I got him.
"Masala" is an Indian term for mixture of spices. You may have heard of chana/chickpea masala or chicken tikka masala. Dishes with "masala" in the title are often red and kind of spicy. Being that this dog was kind of ruddy brown, and definitely a mix of things, I decided to call him Masala. (Ok, I'll fess up - I picked the name before I thought all of that out, but I think it works.)
He's a little sick and under-nourished due to his time at the animal shelter, but I'm starting to fatten him up with turkey along with his puppy food. With some love and lots of good vibes, hopefully he'll come out ok!
Everytime I try to take a picture, he sees me and starts running toward the camera like this. You can see his collar is twice his size. Sometimes he bites it and it looks like he's taking himself for a walk - it's one of the cutest things I've ever seen, and he drops it whenever I get the camera out.
Playing with his new squeaky alien.
(And yes, it is entirely possible the blog will for the immediate future become a shrine to my puppy, but I'll try to spice it up a bit if my brain can possibly fathom any other topic.)

Oh my gosh, Masala is SO insanely adorable! He might be the cutest puppy I have ever seen! I'm so glad that he has someone wonderful like you to take care of him and get him nice and healthy. I'm sure he'll give you lots of love and laughs in return.
I agree! Masala is killing me, he's so cute! He is definitely one lucky boy for you to have found him!
Congrats in the new addition to your family!! What a cutie. I will come visit and help you fatten him up!!
Oh, and if you clog the blog with millions of photos of him, it's ok with me!
Way too adorable for his own good. And LOVE the name; very creative and appropriate. I'd heard of chicken maRsala, but this word was a new one for me. Thanks for the education.
And please DO post lots of pictures, he's just so sweet looking, we need to watch him grow! Boss grabs his tab leash like he's walking himself, too, so I know just what you are talking about, it's really amusing.
I'm so glad you went with your heart rather than your brain, because Niki without a dog seems so unnatural, even if it has been 10 years since you've had one, it's still a big association for me. And he'll definitely pay you back ten times over for choosing him. Something about pound puppies makes them always seem so grateful to have been chosen and rescued and so loved.
well damn. warm and fuzzies comforting this cold heart of mine...
He's fabulous...I know he'll be such a great buddy for you. And he's just too cute for words.
By the way...can you IMAGINE us having a dog when we lived together in college? As if the place wasn't messy enough!
